Presentation Description:

Tired of the way things are going in our culture? Feeling like relocating to another country? Why not take a break from complaining, get off your couch, and get engaged in two very important and very immediate local issues?

"This is a time rife with opportunities to participate in democracy!" said Joanie McGowan, local comedienne and author of "Rude Awakening". "Within a week of the performances, Rogue Valley residents will have their final opportunity to participate in two very important decisions that will directly effect their quality of life; the Measure 30 ballot and the DEQ's proposed changes to air pollution rules and regulations. We won't be telling people how to vote or comment, we just want them to know what the issues are and express their opinion."

McGowan's one-act political comedy has been performed for enthusiastic audiences over 30 times in various locations around Oregon, including opening for columnist Molly Ivins to a sold-out 750 seat house at the McDonald Theatre in Eugene. "It was fabulous to play for such a big crowd. Hearing the laughter and applause rolling all the way to the back of the balcony was a total blast." McGowan said.

McGowan plays herself in the show, joined by Carolyn Hitt in the role of American Spellcasting Network news anchor Fox McFearlips. Patrick Hicks will play the news runner. The play will be performed as directed by Aldo Billinsglea.

The performances will open with the cast's reading of a new piece McGowan is writing to augment the show during this presidential election year. "It's not finished, I think I know where it's going, but I could be entirely wrong." McGowan admitted.

Tickets for "Rude Awakening" are $8 ($1 from each ticket will be donated to the League of Women Voters to support their efforts to get whiners registered to vote.) Seating is limited to 50 audience members per show.

Tickets can be purchased at Music Coop in the A Street Marketplace on the corner of Pioneer & A Streets in Ashland, or by calling (541) 941-9799.

* A special "Stop the Whining and Get Busy" performance dedicated to getting people to comment on the DEQ's proposed changes to rules and regulations on air pollution in Jackson County AND get their ballots in on Measure 30. The play will open with a reading of a short new piece McGowan is writing to augment the play for the election year.
