Presentation Description:

"It is only when we forget all of our learning that we begin to know. I do not get nearer by a hair's breadth to any natural object so long as I presume that I have an introduction to it from some learned man. To conceive of it with a total apprehension I must for the thousandth time approach it as something strange. If you would make acquaintance with the ferns you must forget your botany- You must be aware that nothing is what you have taken it to be. Your great success will be to simply perceive things as they are." -Henry David Thoreau

In the past, humans understood themselves as connected to the earth through the complex web of interrelating systems that we now just call Nature. For the past few hundred years human beings have begun separating themselves from the earth to such an extent that we have lost the connection to the fundamental knowledge and energy that sustains us on the planet.

In this experiential presentation Design From Nature, Andy Fischer will discuss the work that he is doing to harmonize the human realm with natural systems. His Work is based on reestablishing the pathways where Mother Nature is teaching us through direct connection to living within the actual non-linear flow of natural systems.

The presentation is based on his work in forests throughout the world over the past 15 years and the work of Henry David Thoreau, Masanobu Fukuoka, Luther Burbank, and Goethe. Andy will discuss topics such as: non-linear systems, self organizing systems, fractals, learning directly from nature, biomimicry, perfection in nature, plant communication, and natural systems design. The context for all of these interrelating topics is designing ecological based living systems otherwise known as Permaculture. One of the core principles of Permaculture is observation and interaction with nature. Expanding our abilities as designers to perceive more deeply what is actually happening in Nature will enable us to create beautiful, healthy and harmonious community living spaces.

A Discussion of the Heart-

The Heart is an organ of perception. Between 60 and 65 percent of the cells of the heart are neural cells. They are the same kind of cells as those found in the brain and they function exactly the same way. The heart is in fact directly wired to the central nervous system and brain interconnected with the amygdala, thalamus, hippocampus and cortex. These brain centers are primarily concerned with:

1. emotional memories and processing
2. sensory experience
3. memory, spatial relationships, extraction of meaning from the environment
4. problem solving, reasoning and learning

This understanding has enormous implications for us to understand how to escape from the mind centered knowing and limited way of perceiving the world. A discussion and demonstration of the importance of heart-based communication will be part of the evening's presentation.

Questions to be addressed in this presentation:

1) How do we communicate directly with a plant or an element in the natural world and begin to understand what is actually happening?

2) What is being called for to develop our senses to tune in to these subtle energies?

Presenter's Biography:

Andy Fischer has an MS in environmental studies from the University of Oregon. He has been a student in the natural world his entire life. For the past fifteen years Andy has traveled and worked throughout the world studying forest ecosystems including two trips to the Amazon rainforest.

A large part of his work has been with medicinal plants and he has worked with traditional healers in Mexico, Peru and Brazil learning about the native uses of plants. Using his knowledge of natural systems and ecology Andy has been teaching Permaculture Design and has a design business focusing on designing ecological landscapes for clients in the Rogue Valley.
