The Ashland Spiritual Cinema Community (ASCC) is a collective of filmmakers
and movie enthusiasts in the Southern Oregon region, who, in association
with Hollywood producer and filmmaker Stephen Simon (What Dreams May Come,
Somewhere In Time, Indigo) and in support of his vision, come together to
celebrate , recognize, honor and promote the specific genre of Spiritual
Cinema and to participate in the active development, presentation and
discussion of this aspect of filmmaking and to further explore the positive
effects this kind of cinema can generate in our lives and in the world
around us. We encourage you to join us for an evening of conscious film
viewing and a lively and engaging discussion.
FILM : This evening we will be screening the movie "Altered States" (1980)
directed by legendary filmmaker Ken Russell, scripted by Paddy Chayefsky &
Sidney Aaron and starring William Hurt in his feature film debut, Blair
Brown, Charles Haid and (see if you can spot her) a pre-E.T. Drew Barrymore.
Running Time: 1 hours 43 minutes
Research scientist and psycho-physiologist Eddie Jessup (William Hurt)
believes other states of consciousness are as real as everyday reality.
Obsessed with the task of discovering the inner man, he begins performing
experiments with human consciousness, eventually deciding to test his
findings on himself. Experimenting with auto-sensory deprivation and then
adding powerful, hallucinogenic drugs, he explores these altered states,
slipping way back through the evolutionary order, until he actually changes
form physically, ending up as a proto-homonid and enduring psychological
experiences that make madness seem a blessing. He eventually returns to
his normal state, but is ultimately saved from complete insanity through the
power of love. Working from Paddy Chayefsky�s novel, director Ken Russell
guides us with a sorcerer�s skill through Eddie�s magical and horrific
journey as Altered States gyrates with dazzling visual bravado and bracing
emotional impact. Great performances and mind-blowing special effects.

Mobius Media Center. These gatherings are for members of the ASCC and their
