![]() Time: 6:30pm-10:00pm Location: Mobius Media Center 281 4th Street, Ashland The Ashland Spiritual Cinema Community (ASCC) is a collective of filmmakers and movie enthusiasts in the Southern Oregon region, who, in association with Hollywood producer and filmmaker Stephen Simon (What Dreams May Come, Somewhere In Time, Indigo) and in support of his vision, come together to celebrate , recognize, honor and promote the specific genre of Spiritual Cinema and to participate in the active development, presentation and discussion of this aspect of filmmaking and to further explore the positive effects this kind of cinema can generate in our lives and in the world around us. We encourage you to join us for an evening of conscious film viewing and a lively and engaging discussion. FILM: This evening we will be screening director Stanley Kubrick's classic "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) starring Keir Dullea, William Sylvester and Gary Lockwood. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY remains a masterpiece of filmmaking. Director and (with Arthur C. Clarke) co-screenwriter Stanley Kubrick has created a visual and aural spectacle that stands as one of the greatest achievements ever put on celluloid. Hard to believe it's been over 35 years since the movie premiered. The film begins with the "Dawn of Man" segment, about the evolution of apes, and then ventures into the future, taking a look at what the world might be like in the first year of the 21st century. Kubrick's film is a triumph of technological storytelling, with stunning sets and a brilliant, overwhelming soundtrack. Long dialogue-free scenes sparkle with indelible images backed by powerful orchestral music, culminating in an unforgettable, inscrutable tale of birth and rebirth, human evolution and artificial intelligence, the past and the future. Running Time: 2 hours 35 minutes (Bring a cushion) A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government (while hiding the situation from the public) sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission. Eighteen months later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant object--but on this trip something goes terribly wrong. Production on the film lasted four years. The film was based on Arthur C. Clarke's short story "The Sentinel." 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1991. Kubrick won an Oscar for Best Effects/Special Visual Effects, the only Oscar win of his career. "I enjoy working with people."--HAL 9000 _____________ Meeting Format: 6:15-6:30pm: Arrival 6:30pm: Welcome & Announcements 6:40pm: Opening Circle 6:45-8:45pm: Film Screening 8:50-9:55pm: Discussion 9:55-10:00pm: Closing Circle Mystical Movie Nights are held the second Wednesday of every month at the Mobius Media Center.
