Part One of Two: Dream Interpretation and Lucid Dreaming

Presentation Description:
Dreaming is perhaps the most mysterious experience that all humans share. Although everyone dreams -- every single night -- some of us have no memory of dreaming, while others can recall only tantalizing bits and pieces.
Wondering and speculating over thousands of years, a few cultures have developed valuable ways of working with dreams, but there until the last few decades there was virtually no scientific understanding of the dreaming process. Now the time is ripe to synthesize these sources of knowledge -- to survey and understand the world in which we all spend a third of our lives.
EXPLORING THE NEW WORLD OF DREAMS is a series of two lectures, each of which can be enjoyed and understood separately. The first, "Dream Interpretation and Lucid Dreaming," will be presented Sunday, August 1 and repeated the following night. A brief overview of the physiology of sleep and dreaming is followed by an explanation of how this latest knowledge changes our view of what dreams are and what they mean. The lecture concludes with a thorough discussion of "lucid dreaming" -- the ability to become aware that we are dreaming and continue to be conscious within the dream, fully participating in it - and even controlling it.
In the course of this lively non-technical lecture, you will learn
What happens within your brain and body as you dream.
Why dreams are sometimes surreal, black-and-white, or impossible to hold onto.
How to remember more of your dreams.
How to understand what your dreams are trying to tell you.
How to experience "lucid dreaming" -- step-by-step through several techniques.
Bill Adams conceives his lectures and classes in the spirit of the old Chautauquas that criss-crossed America in the Nineteenth Century, providing entertainment as well as enlightenment through the use of humor and personal examples. Asked if he could really improve on the tradition of Ashland's one-time Chautauqua Dome (on the current site of the Shakespeare Festival) Bill replies: "Don't forget the air conditioning."
The main lecture should not run over 90 minutes, with a brief break, and will be followed by "questions, and possibly even answers." Notes for the instructional parts of the lecture will be made available free after the lecture, at an Internet address to be announced.

Bill Adams is a writer, editor, and stage performer based in Ashland. He is the co-author of THE UNWOUND WAY ("Tremendously impressive." - LOCUS Magazine) and THE END OF FAME ("An intricate machine . . . The closer you look, the more details you see, like a fractal design revealing new structure at increasingly greater magnifications." - Catharine Asaro, astrophysicist and author of THE LAST HAWK), and (as "T.M. Adams") has frequently been published in ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S and ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE.
His "day jobs" have always been at night and usually on the graveyard shift: no-tell motel manager, "trouble desk" for a detective agency, bonded courier, radio dispatcher. Hence his thirty years' interest and research into the interrelated mysteries of sleep, dreams, and memory -- and the sometimes-bizarre anecdotes that color and enliven his lectures.
He currently teaches small-group classes in memory and test-taking skills here in Ashland, and can be reached at wadams9@mind.net.

Video Description: This renound film showcases Noam Chomsky, one of America's leading linguists and political dissidents. It also illustrates his message of how government and big media businesses cooperate to produce an effective propaganda machine in order to manipulate the opinions of the United States populous.
Peter Wintonick and Mark Achbar made this penetrating documentary about the career and views of linguist and media critic Noam Chomsky. While the man is the subject of the movie, the filmmakers wisely and carefully choose not to make Chomsky more important than his insights into the way print and electronic journalism tacitly and often willingly further the agendas of the powerful. We learn a lot about Chomsky's formative experiences as a child, student, academic, activist, and politician (he has campaigned for office), but we learn just as much about the media institutions that deny him access today, from ABC to PBS. The centerpiece of the film, arguably, is a long examination into the history of the New York Times' coverage of Indonesia's atrocity-ridden occupation of East Timor, reportage that (as Chomsky shows us) was absolutely in lock step with the government's unwillingness to criticize an ally.

The next evolution of humanity is to live in a world created in love and joy. Our process to get there is embracing the truth. What is this Truth that sets us free and how do we activate it in our lives? This is the art of spiritual healing as taught by Babaji and other masters through the ages.
On this evening, we will experience his step-by-step meditation that will work with these truths, dispelling the false beliefs that keep us from experiencing perfect relationships, health, and abundance. We will also present the teachings of Hira Ratan Manek on Suryanamaskar, the ancient practice of sungazing. Manek says this practice will end spiritual ignorance, and all physical, mental and emotional illness. He has lived on sunlight and water alone for many years.

Asha Deliverance is the founder and visionary of Pacific Domes Inc. of Ashland, which has been operational since 1980. Asha has been practicing yoga for over thirty years and has delivered over 150 babies as a professional midwife. She herself is the mother of seven children. Asha is an advocate of environmental sustainability and is actively promoting the work of Nassim Haramein, Ian Lungold and other leading-edge thinkers.

Presenter's Biography:
Composer and performance artist Aletha Nowitzky, alias Ma Cappella, has been caught red-handed in a giggle of intriguing venues (not to mention costumes). Her motto, "Be what you want to see!" has goaded Aletha into past shifts of shape such as a mermaid in a fountain, a fairy on a tree stump, an angel in a living nativity, and an animal rejoicing on Saint Francis' Day in the "Church of Harmania", each spouting a strange and wacky wisdom that is unique to their collective creator.
On a self-styled "heaventriloquest" for the pleasure of the game, Aletha listens, synthesizes, and sings in a manner unheard of anywhere else, radiating the truth that "We can change the world with imaginarrative coming from the mouths of children like us."

A panel of four presenters, each with decades of involvement with the community
of Auroville, will present the ideals and realities of building true human unity through profound diversity.The first hour will be devoted an integral overview of the township through a DVD and slide show presentation. The second hour will be a discussion and question and answer period for the audience with a particular emphasis on how lessons, challenges, and accomplishments of Auroville are relevant to our Ashland/ Rogue Valley community, and the USA in general, at this moment with all of our present political power struggles.
Auroville, in South India, was inagurated on Feb.28, 1968 with youth from 121 nations placing a handful of earth from their home countries in a lotus shaped urn in the center of the proposed city. Over the last 36 years Auroville has become an extrodinary model for environmental regeneration, building with appropriate and sustainable materials, developement of small scale handicrafts and industry for itself and for the many surronding villages, providing alliopathic and a wide range of healing therapies again for its own members and for the surronding local peoples, developing multiple educational approaches, and being a bold experiment in self government while still interfacing with the Indian government.
Based on a Vision of The Mother and spiritual inspiration of Sri Aurobindo, the foundation of Auroville is grounded in each individual's aspiration to discover and live from their authentic self in a progressively more conscious union with the Divine.
However how each person cultivates their spiritual awareness is left to the individual's discretion. There are no set disciplines, yet many structured activites such as various yoga classes and meditations are available.

Mark Rich, the author of 'Energetic Anatomy: An Illustrated Guide to Understanding and Using the Human Energy System" will explain what the Human Energy System is, how it works, and why it is important to know something about it. This is an expanded model of energy, more inclusive than past models that have focused mainly on chakras and the aura. The HES goes far beyond these basics. Mark will discuss in detail structures never before described in print.
The second half of the evening will be interactive. Mark will guide you through exercises designed to open your awareness and control of these energies. With conscious control comes the ability to use these structures to promote health and wellness. There will be time for questions and answers as well.

Presentation Description:
In today's world with our busy schedules, and constant distractions, where do we go to ponder our direction in life? How do we know who we are, what is right for us? Where does this puzzle piece that is myself fit into the rest of the world around me? Do we make time in our lives to sit in silence and just be? There is a simple tool used by all of our ancestors to do all of this, and more, and that is the Vision Quest.
Questing was a tool used by all indigenous people, as a sacred journey in order to better know one self, often as a rite of passage from adolescence into adulthood, and during other times of transition during their lives. This tool is available to us now. A Quest provides the opportunity to seek clarity, and direction in our lives. It can help you distill meaning from all that surrounds you, both during the Quest, and after.
So what is a Vision Quest? There are many different traditions, superstitions, and expectations surrounding the idea of a Quest. Through Stalking Wolf's teachings, a Lipan Apache Elder,I have been taught a Quest that has been created from the distillation of many traditions, simplified down to its barest elements, so as to allow the experience of the individual Quester to be the focus.
A Vision Quest as I have been taught, is a four day experience, alone in the wilderness, fasting from food, but not water, and staying inside of an area that you create as your Quest circle, about 10 feet in diameter. I recommend that a person's first Quest be done with a Protector. A Protector is a person that helps with the logistics of the experience, and also provides some helpful tools to use during your personal, or spiritual
growth while Questing. An analogy that I love is one of a diver, diving off a 10 meter platform for the first time. With no guidance you will surly hit the water, but it might hurt, and you may not penetrate the water very deeply. Given just a bit of guidance, your entry will be much smoother, and your penetration into the water will be much deeper. You will be more satisfied with the results, and more likely to try it again.
The only prerequisite to Quest is a desire to do it.
Presenter's Biography:
Gordon Scott is a new member of the Southern Oregon Community, an ex Navy SEAL, now an instructor with Coyote Tracks, which is a wilderness awareness school for youth 7-17years old, and a Vision Quest Protector. Trained by Malcolm Ringwalt of Earth Heart, and Tom Brown Jr, of the Tracker Wilderness Survival School, in the tradition of the Vision Quest as taught by Stalking Wolf, a Lipan Apache Elder.
