Presentation Description:

Mark Gaffney is a researcher, writer, poet, environmentalist, peace activist, and organic gardener.

Mark's first book, Dimona the Third Temple?, was a pioneering study of the Israeli nuclear weapons program. Released in 1989, the book told the remarkable story of Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli nuclear technician who endured a fate worse than death: the hellish ordeal of eleven and a half years in solitary confinement in an Israeli prison. His crime? Revealing information to the world press that confirmed the existence of Israel's secret plutonium separation plant.

Although branded a traitor by many in Israel, Vanunu became a hero to the cause of world nuclear disarmament. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year since 1987. He was finally released from Ashkelon Prison on April 20, 2004. (Shortly before the release of Mark's new book.)

Mark Gaffney also has environmental credits. He was the principal organizer of the first Earth Day at Colorado State University in April 1970.

Between 1989-1993 Mark worked for National Audubon Society inventorying and mapping Oregon's remaining old growth forests. Mark was assigned to five national forests in eastern Oregon. The maps he helped to develop are now a key part of the GIS database, and are used every day in land management decisions to conserve endangered species and threatened ecosystems.

In 2001 Mark produced a novel, The First Tree of the Day, currently available from www.Booklocker.com. It's about a young man's coming of age. The themes are two: environmental devastation and human renewal.

Mark's op/ed pieces, essays, and poetry have appeared in at least seventeen journals, magazines, and newspapers. His articles on the Mid East, Vanunu and nuclear proliferation have been posted all over the web.

Mark holds a BS degree (Physical Science) from Colorado State University.

Gnostic Secrets of the Naassenes is Mark's third book. There are plans for another.
