Presentation Description:
How much damage has Abu Ghraib had on America's credibility as a defender of freedom and human rights around the world? The U.S.viewed as one of the principal advocates of human rights- now is viewed as the principal expositor of torture. There is a strong suggestion that the physical and psychological torture employed was an inevitable outgrowth of military and government policies. To date, only one high ranking officer has been penalized; while at the same time other related high ranking officials have been promoted and not subject to independent inquiry.
The film raises serious questions about what happened, why, how ordinary American soldiers could engage in such monstrous acts- totally ignoring the Geneva Conventions. It traces the political and legal precedents and interviews both Iraqi victims and their U.S. guards. Questions arise about kidnappings, renditions, the Gulag at Guantamino.
Is this a picture of who we are, who we have become? Is it acceptable? Where do we go from here?
"Ghosts of Abu Ghraib" was an official selection of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
