Lecture: The Universal Language of Mathematics
By Paul Stang
$5.00 - 20.00 Suggested donation, everyone welcome
Presentation Description:
It's been said that modern education only teaches to one hemisphere, "and only 1/2 of one chakra". Today, math and science are emphasized. In this workshop, Paul Stang will present his book on creative mathematics, which shows ways to make learning math and some forms of science more fulfilling. He will also show his workshops on mandalas, geometric art and sacred geometry. Further demonstration will be presented on manipulatives like Zome Tools and a similar product from the UK called Astro-Logix. Many times, mathematics is referred to as the "universal" language.
What I find is that amazing relationships and patterns exist and there are in fact universal terms like the square root of 2, and 3, and Phi. Unfortunately, the manner in which we are normally educated makes it nearly impossible to see patterns develop, and hence math tends to be dead and dull. Routine work however, without calculators and with observation, reveal an inherent "Wisdom" buried within mathematics.
Many people use the term Sacred Geometry today, often associating between this appellation and the phi proportion. We do find within concrete study that Phi is a very unique number. The ratios associated with it, with spirals and the five pointed star, the dodecahedron and icosahedron, contain great beauty in a regularity which is awesome.
It is interesting to note that such human symbols as the Yin/Yang, triskellon, and swastika can be created by use of phi. We can wonder that the great pyramids of Giza and Teotihuacan, and Stonehenge, are built relating to phi. We can also enjoy the string of approximations to phi which are found in the proportions in the Human body and our solar system. In this talk, we will find awe.
