First Friday Art Walk: "Geometry of a Spirit, Moments in Meditation" by Goa Lobaugh
Through the month of December, RVML will feature the original artwork of Goa Lobaugh opening First Friday, December 5 from 5pm - 8pm. The exhibit will be located downstairs the Media Exchange at 258 A Street across from Ace Hardware.
Entitled, "
Geometry of a Spirit, Moments in Meditation," Lobaugh blends spirituality with technology. "In Tibet, at the highest monastery on the planet, it occurred to me that I could blend my computer skills and my spiritual path to find my creative outlet," says Goa Lobaugh, founder of Liquid Buddha Studios, an Ashland visual effects and animation company that has done work for such spiritually innovative organizations as Wingmakers, HeartMath, and Earthdance International.
Lobaugh, a private pilot, narrowly avoided a plane crash in 1999 and, when faced with his mortality, says "I realized my priorities were badly out of balance." He quit his job as an IT engineer with America Online and embarked on what he describes as "a mythic journey around the world." It was on this journey, sitting with Buddhist monks in the Himalayas, that he decided on a path to combine spirituality with technology in the form of digital animation creating what he describes as "visual effects for conscious evolution."
Self-taught, Lobaugh quickly achieved recognition for his work, which has appeared nationally and internationally at film festivals and gallery shows. In May 2008 he had a solo show at Bohemia Gallery in Ashland. Most recently, Goa's work was included in a Square Foot exhibit in NYC- hosted by Alex Grey's MicroCosm Gallery. Pieces from that show will be included in the showing at RVML in December. Inspired by science, his work is based on sacred geometric structures, which, he says, is the mainstay of his design approach. "I am fascinated by the cycles of the natural world and this leads me to reflect on mathematics and the spiritual and creative truths revealed in its patterns," he says. "I am translating scientific findings and turning them into eye candy," he adds with a smile. Liquid Buddha currently has several films in production and the show will feature stills from them as well as animations projected on display screens.
Liquid Buddha Studios focuses on creating visual effects for conscious evolution. By blending technology with spirituality they use digital animation grounded in sacred geometry to reveal the creative truths hidden within its patterns; translating science into eye candy for a variety of spiritually progressive clients.
