This Week's Film:

(US, 2005) A suspense drama based on a novel by John Le Carre. A low-level British diplomat who has been given a new assignment in Kenya. His wife is an activist with a keen interest in issues of poverty and social justice; he urges her to avoid getting too deeply involved in the people living in Kenya, who are constantly dogged by poverty, but she shows little interest in obeying these instructions." Through events that follow, we witness the diplomat's arc of transformation as he follows the call to wake up and take action.

June Book Discussion: "Yes Man" by Danny Wallace

http://www.amazon.com/Yes-Man-Danny-Wallace/dp/1416918345

About the Book:
Wallace, a freelance radio producer for the BBC in London, takes three simple words uttered by a stranger on a bus-"say yes more"-as a challenge and says "yes" to everything for a year. He says "yes" to pamphleteers on the street, the credit card offers stuffing his mailbox and solicitations on the Internet. He attends meetings with a group that believes aliens built the pyramids in Egypt, says "yes" to every invitation to go out on the town and furthers his career by saying "yes" in meetings with executives. The potential for enlightenment and insight into the human condition abounds, yet Wallace doesn't dig deep. Mostly, he covers his relationships with his male friends and former and current girlfriends. While the writing is lively enough-arch and full of colorful British slang-the minutiae of Wallace's world won't fascinate readers as much as it seems to fascinate him. The book is culled from his diary, and it shows: the text is crammed with casual observations and mundane details of everyday life. It meanders through the year, shapeless and slack. Still, Wallace raises an interesting question-if you said "yes" to everything, would you be prepared to deal with the outcome?

Series Description:

Join facilitator Marla Estes to watch and discuss the concepts of love, psychology, sociology and culture in these great films. All ages welcome!

This Week's Film:

(U.K., 2002) This film chronicles two parallel coming-of-age stories of a thirty-something, layabout "serial nice guy" living a posh, carefree lifestyle off his deceased father's fortune; and a bright but awkward preteen youth who's tired of his mom's depressed, boyfriend-less state." This funny, charming film not only gives us the opportunity to laugh but to talk about what it means to grow up...at any age.

Please note
: The actual title of these films is not permitted on our website per our Licensing Agreement. Sorry! However; the titles are included in RVML's Weekly Event Announcement e-Mails (see below for link).

Lecture: Earth Rights Democracy Tour- "The Earth Belongs to Everyone"

By Author & Lecturer Alanna Hartzok

Free Admission, Donations Welcome!

Presentation Description:

Author lecturer Alanna Hartzok co-founder of Earth Rights Institute speaks on the new social, political and economic paradigm emerging from renewed understanding of the economics of land and the systemic dysfunction, grotesque disparity of wealth, real estate/land speculation, urban sprawl, environmental destruction and the current economic collapse caused by existing land tenure and tax systems.

Chief Seattle asked: How can you buy and sell the earth? The answer to that for encroaching Europeans was easy. "Just watch us" we said. People migrated to the new World for land that was free for the taking and 99% wouldn't have come otherwise. Nothing could stem this tide and nothing was too terrible to perpetrate on the natives of these so-called free lands in the process of taking the land. Failure to understand the economic aspects of our connection to the earth prevented mainstream economists from predicting the kind of economic collapse that we are now experiencing.

Everywhere good hearted people are starting to awaken to the issue of the "commons". This presentation will take you to the next level of how it is literally true that the earth is ours why and how it is possible to take it back easily for the benefit of all including those who now monopolize it solving many related problems in the process.

Facilitator's Biography:

Alanna Hartzok is Co-Director of Earth Rights Institute, a civil society organization working for economic justice and peaceful resolution of conflicts. In her role as CoDirector of Earth Rights Institute Alanna Hartzok works for ecological village development and for "earth rights policies" for fair land tenure and public finance from a local-to-global framework. Under contract with the UN HABITAT's Global Land Tool Network she recently developed an online course and training program that now has several hundred people enrolled from 64 countries. She is the author of The Earth Belongs to Everyone, recipient of the Radical Middle Book Award.
