Nuclear Power: Unaffordable at Any Price by Lloyd Marbe & Cathryn Chudy

July 17 @ 7:00 pm

FREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St., Ashland, OR. One mile west of I-5 Exit 14

This presentation starts with an abbreviated history of Oregon’s failed Trojan Nuclear Power Plant and the status of its high-level nuclear waste, which still remains on site in Rainier, Oregon, waiting for permanent disposal.

  • It references the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear accident in Middletown, PA and another nuclear accident that took place in Church Rock, NM.
  • It provides a review of energy regulatory laws in both Oregon and Washington state.
  • It tells the story of how NuScale’s Small Modular Nuclear Reactor (SMNR) came to Oregon, and how similar designed nuclear reactors are proposed for the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state.

Finally, we examine the existential threat of the recently passed congressional legislation known as the “ADVANCE Act” and the extension of the 1957 Price Anderson Act, both of which seriously impact nuclear safety and set it back 50 years.

Lloyd Marbet has worked as an anti-nuclear activist since 1972, in both the states of Oregon and Washington. Since 1992, he has been the Executive Director of the Oregon Conservancy.

Foundation working to keep fossil fuels in the ground, opposing the resurgence of nuclear power’s Small Modular Nuclear Reactor (SMNR) designs, and promoting the use of clean, renewable energy; energy efficiency, and energy conservation applications.

Cathryn Chudy is a retired mental health therapist, and a long time climate activist. She is a member of the Oregon Conservancy Foundation’s Board of Directors, and associate producer of the documentary film: “Atomic Bamboozle – The False Promise of a Nuclear Renaissance.”

Presented by: Oregon Conservancy Foundation in cooperation with SOCAN (Southern Oregon Climate Action Now)
