Description:
Representatives from the Prometheus Radio Project will be speaking about low powered FM radio, corporate media consolidation, and community broadcasting. Build your own community radio station and take back the air waves!
After the talk, please join us for an open house at the KSKQ studio, just around the corner and upstairs from the RVML in suite 6.
From April 23rd to May 15th, radio and media activists from Prometheus Radio Project and PCUN union organizers will join together to tour cities from northern California to Seattle, Washington to kick-off their tour for the upcoming barnraising in Woodburn, Oregon with the farmworkers organization, PCUN- Pineros y Campesinos del Noroeste (Northwest Treeplanters and Farmworkers United). They will be bringing tips about radio equipment, programming, and speaking about democratic media and recent station- building trips abroad. "This will also be a great opportunity to show support for the rights and dignity of the people who feed us all!" says Petri of Prometheus Radio
Prometheus' organizing tour in the Northwest will culminate with a "Low Power Radio Barnraising," conference, where radio activists and programmers from across the nation will gather to build a radio station over the course of a weekend. This summer, the PCUN barnraising conference will be in Woodburn, Oregon the weekend of August 18-20, 2006.
PCUN is Oregon's union of farmworkers, nursery, and reforestation workers, and Oregon's largest Latino organization. PCUN's fundamental goal is to empower farmworkers to understand and take action against systematic exploitation and all of its effects. In August, PCUN will expand its advocacy for the people and culture of Woodburn into the world of radio.
Prometheus workshops are different in every town. They nearly always include some history of the radio dial, an account of the pirate radio movement and the LPFM victory, an introduction to do-it-yourself radio engineering, a demonstration with a small transmitter, and an explanation about rules and procedures for applicants for radio stations.
