Lecture: Spirituality and Sustainability
By Scott McGuire

$3-5 Donation requested

Presentation Description:

Why are you alive at this time? What is your purpose upon this planet at the end of the Oil Empire? What is your contribution to the emerging community of those who consciously choose to live sustainably? Exploring the true nature of personal power in a culture of over-consumptive excess will be a theme we all must face with our loved ones as we encounter 1) the wall of Peak Oil 2) the End Times 3) the Golden Age and 4) all of the above.

How do we reconcile these seemingly contradictory views of our near future? How do we balance living in love and moving through our fears amidst growing change and instability? These are spiritual questions, as well as political and ethical problems we all must face.

When I was an organic farmer, I was convinced that sustainable agriculture was something farmers had to do. Now I'm quite sure it will also be something that people do. Expecting to be fed by farmers "somewhere" is part of the package of responsibility we delegate to "others". In self-help jargon, this is called "giving your power away", yet reclaiming one's power is seldom framed as the ability to feed oneself. Sustainable agriculture means we will be fed by ourselves, and by those nearest to hearth and home, our neighbors, and yes, farmers, who will become our friends. Or will our friends become farmers?

Scott McGuire will address these topics and more at his talk on Spirituality and Sustainability, and will serve as an introduction to his series of classes offered throughout the summer. See www.whitesagegardens.com for more details.
