Description:

60-minute Video followed by 60-minute discussion and Q&A with local Vipassana representatives.

Vipassana is an ancient meditation technique, a simple and practical way to achieve real peace of mind and lead a happy, useful life. This non-sectarian technique is a process of mental purification through systemic self-observation. It is taught in over fifty permanent centers around the world, with over 70,000 peopole participating in 2003. The Northwest Vipassana Center, a permanent center in rural southwest Washington, conducts courses for new and old adult students, as well as special short courses for children.

Vipassana practice leads to: mental balance, heightened concentration and reduced stress.

A residential retreat will be held September 14-25th at Camp Latgawa in the Rogue River National Forest,east of Medfor in southwest Oregon. Vegetarian meals, heated cabins and showers are available. Early registration is advised.

According to the tradition of pure Vipassana, all meditation courses are run solely on a donation basis. Donations are accepted from people who have completed at least one ten-day course with Mr. Goenka or one of this assistant teachers.

Ten-day courses in prisons are now occurring in India, the United States and other countries. "Doing Time, Doing ipassana" is an award-winning video that describes the dramatic changes stemming from Tijar Prison courses in India. This video is available at the Ashland, Medford and Yreka Public Libraries and the Rogue Valley Metaphysical Library in Ashland.

Note: This is a follow-up discussion to Ishara's August 30th lecture titled: "Connecting the Dots- Seeing the Hidden Threat to Human Freedom". Familiarity with the lecture or the subject matter is not required. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The evolution of our planet now requires a deeper and more comprehensive understanding from us. We need a context in which to actually see what is happening.
Our world is emerging into a Greater Community of intelligent life and is already being 'visited' by several alien races. This presents both tremendous challenges and a great opportunity. To realize the potential for good in this situation requires a growth toward a higher consciousness called "Knowledge".

Additionally we need wisdom about the Rules of Engagement. We run the risk of loosing the sovereignty of our home planet unless we are willing to learn about the evolutionary threshold in a realistic way.

Moved by a love for the Earth, for humanity, and for freedom; please open your minds and hearts to consider such topics as:

What is the hidden threat to our freedom?
(based on the Allies of Humanity report)

Does technological superiority equal spiritual development?

What is the role of the mental environment?

What help is available to us?

How is true Knowledge accessed?

What are the Rules of Engagement?

How does idealism leave us vulnerable to manipulation?

What role does spiritual practice play?

Many people are feeling a call to fulfill a purpose for which we took birth. Whatever our individual role may be, we need to understand the challenge we are faced with to see the way forward that is true. May we support one another in this endeavor.


Presenter's Biography:

Ishara Larkin, M.A., has been a student of the Steps to Knowledge program since 1990. She began as a social activist in the 1970's, and then turned to spiritual practice and psychological study as the means by which to help the world. Graduating from the
Institute of Creation Centered Spirituality in 1983, her quest for consciousness turned to numerous teachers and teachings, including Adi Da, holotropic breathwork, A. H. Almaas, Society for Ascention, Gangaji, Burt Hellinger, and others. She became a soul level healer through the Complete Self Attunement training, and this work has now evolved into planetary healing.

For the past 7 years Ishara has traveled extensively, including 18 months in the UK, where her ancestral ties reside and deepened her awareness of earth energies. Through all of this time, the essays of the Greater Community Way of Knowledge and the Steps to Knowledge have informed her understanding. After seeing the recent remake of the movie War of the Worlds, she was moved to reach out to the Ashland community to share a perspective of wisdom on this misreprented topic.

Presenter's Biography:

I was born in Poland and raised in Poland and Germany. After an early exploration of my artistic side, drawing very detailed images of mushrooms and other items I found in nature, I turned to science. Studies of mathematics and physics were followed by philosophy, sociology, psychology and several other disciplines at two universities in Germany.

After graduation I embarked on an open-ended journey, which brought me to the US and the exploration of various spiritual traditions and metaphysical findings in theory and practice.

In addition I spend some time with a shaman in Peru, which grounded my more abstract experiences to the global earth traditions.

More recently I re-awakened more fully my artistic side and began to create designs which integrate the outer and inner teachings. They incorporate sacred geometry, colors and energetic patterns to help us to remember who and what we are. The overall theme of Living Light Creations is: "Creating the Future by Evoking the Presence".
All my work is dedicated to the wellbeing and upliftment of all life and offered in the spirit of love, joy and abundance for all.

Presentation Description:

You are invited to receive diksha, the transmission of enlightenment energy that activates the flow of divine grace. It is an intelligent flow of cosmic energy that restructures the physical brain, balancing the activity of the two hemispheres, and leads to the flowering of the heart. This in turn creates a shift in perception where the sense of a separate self is realized to be an illusion, and you realize your oneness with all creation, with God.

We have been taught to see enlightenment as the ultimate goal of our spiritual journey. It is a mythical, almost unattainable state of cosmic consciousness that can only happen after enormous struggle, lifetimes of spiritual practice, and much discipline and self-sacrifice. All this is no longer necessary, indeed it never was.

There is an avatar in India known as Kalki Bhagavan who is demonstrating that enlightenment is not something to be achieved through lifetimes of effort, rather it is a shift in perception that can be permanently and irreversibly activated through a neuro-biological shift in our brains. It is a biological rather than a spiritual event, and can be experienced by anybody. Indeed, he maintains that Earth's golden age has now begun, and that everyone on Earth is destined to become enlightened by the year 2012 AD.

The process is initiated through what is known as the 'diksha', when someone who has received and integrated this energy and then been trained to transmit it, places their hands on your head, and activates the seed of divine intelligence in your crown chakra.

For the past 25 years, Savitri Simpson has been an Ananda Sangha minister, counselor, and staff teacher at Ananda's Expanding Light Retreat Center, near Nevada City, CA. and several of Ananda's branch communities, offering classes and seminars on Hatha Yoga, yoga philosophy, and meditation skills. She is well-known for her clear, down-to earth, andhumorous presentations.

Savitri was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. Previous to her association with Ananda, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching certificate, and was a teacher and seminar organizer for the Organic Plant Institute of Washington, Texas. In addition to her primary devotion to yoga, meditation, and all related subjects, she is a musician, herb gardener, gourmet vegetarian cook, and nature lover.

During the last 15 years, Savitri has taught hundreds of classes, workshops, and seminars on the chakras. She is the author of two books, "The Chakras Workbook and Chakras for Starters", published by Crystal Clarity Publishers of Nevada City, CA. She has recently released a CD called "Chakras for Starters" with music and guided visualizations for each chakra. Savitri also gives an explanation for what the chakras are and what they do on a video/DVD called "Yoga Postures to Awaken the Chakras." For several years, Savitri was director of the Ananda Yoga Teacher Training Program and is presently director of the Ananda Meditation Teacher Training Program at The Expanding Light Retreat Center.


Sudarshan Simpson is an Ananda minister, counselor, and teacher, a position he has held since 1982. He is also an excellent actor and storyteller. Sudarshan has a degree in biology, and is a person of many talents including being an expert mechanic and able to fix anything in the known universe, plus excelling in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and so on.

Sudarshan presently teaches classes at Ananda Village as well as many Ananda Centers and Meditation Groups around the country. When he's not doing that, he works for the Ananda Builder's guild. Sudarshan loves to camp out, to hike, to be in nature, to take times of spiritual seclusion, to write and read poetry of all kinds, and to be a good friend to many, many people.

Having walked through the carefully interwoven (and not broken!) stalks of a crop circle in England, sacred geometry researcher, author and digital artist Bruce Rawles is convinced that there is more to the phenomena than just "Doug and Dave" :-) In addition to the magnetic field anomalies reported by researcher Nancy Talbott (that affect the undisturbed crop as well as the bent crop!), the precision, speed and even new mathematical theorems make this area of study quite fascinating.

Bruce entertains the notion that these formations could be shadows in 2D or 3D of higher dimensional messages from the planetary logos/Gaia and impart more than words can convey through a direct language bypassing the intellect. Bruce will present an evening of crop circle imagery and sacred geometry, and share how they may relate to everything from DNA, morphology of the plant and animal kingdoms, terrestrial & astronomical insights and most importantly, the message of interconnectedness. "Getting that message" is key to going beyond survival to thriving as a heart-awakened planet. His presentation will include new imagery showing how hyper-dimensional models may be key in understanding the deeper message of the formations, along with multimedia, images and insights from colleagues such as Freddy Silva, John Martineau, Busty Taylor, and Jay Goldner.


Presenter's Biography:

Bruce Rawles has studied what has become known as sacred geometry since the early 70s. His widely acclaimed, self-published book, Sacred Geometry Design Sourcebook, has been translated into German and he is working on several other books, including an expanded introduction to the seven Hermetic Laws. He was a primary presenter at the Global Sacred Geometry Conference in Sedona, Arizona in February 2004, and contributed key animations to a new BioScope interactive biofeedback game. Johannes Kepler, who gave us elliptical orbits and laws of planetary motion, also created simple geometrical models using universal primal shapes called the Platonic Solids. Kepler was on the right track; he just didn't know how close he was to figuring out accurate models! Martineau has given humankind a quantum jump forward from Kepler's ideas in understanding these relationships.

Howard F. Lyman has brought the issue of the dangers of eating beef to light like never before. A former cattle rancher-turned-vegetarian and food safety activist, in 1996, Lyman revealed, to a national television audience, how the cattle industry potentially exposed Americans to Mad Cow Disease by feeding cows the remains of live animals - including other cows. As a result of his remarks, Lyman was named a co-defendant with Oprah Winfrey in the infamous "veggie libel" case brought by Texas ranchers in Amarillo.

In this shocking and powerful book, Lyman uncovers the dangerous and potentially deadly practices of the cattle and dairy industry. MAD COWBOY is a passionate manifesto for change from an industry insider whose firsthand experiences will alter the way you think about your food, and the people who produce it, forever. "Sure, I used to enjoy my steaks as much as the next guy," writes Lyman. "But if you knew what I know about what goes into them and what they can do to you, you'd probably be a vegetarian like me."

A fourth generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher, Lyman became enamored of the "bold new age of chemically enhanced agriculture" as a student in agricultural college. Spurning the organic farming methods of his father and grandfather, he became a convert to modern chemical farming techniques: he fed his cows with hormones and antibiotics, and blanketed his farm with pesticides and herbicides. With his mind relentlessly focused on profits, he refused to acknowledge the harmful effects that this steady stream of chemicals might pose for the environment and for consumers who would later ingest these chemicals as meat. Admitting that at the time he "never met a chemical he didn't like, " Lyman says that he, like other dairy and cattle farmers, poisoned his animals and polluted his farms.

FOR EXAMPLE:

Cattle ranchers turned cows into cannibals. Until August 1997, cattle were routinely fed the remains of other cows. The Department of Agriculture and the FDA banned the practice, fearing the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, better known as Mad Cow Disease. But it remains legal to feed cows "rendered" -- dead and ground up -- parts of certain animals, including the blood of other cows, despite the fact that this practice may allow deadly illnesses to enter the food chain. In 1995, five million tons of processed slaughterhouse leftovers were sold for animal feed.

In an effort to prevent disease, Lyman, like other ranchers, fed his cows antibiotics even before they became ill. Soon, Lyman was on an "antibiotic treadmill" constantly changing drugs as the cows became resistant to them, and even using antibiotics after they were banned because of the dangers they posed to human health. Every day, Lyman sprayed his feedlot with insecticides which would then fall into the cattle's food and water -- and eventually become part of someone's dinner. Ranchers relentlessly used growth hormones, particularly DES, which they stockpiled when it was banned.

To increase their profits, ranchers also routinely fed growth hormones to cattle within two weeks of their slaughter, despite a government ban on the practice. Dairy ranchers continue to use recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) to enhance milk production, despite the fact that this chemical -- which has been implicated in causing cancer and other diseases -- shows up in milk.

In 1989, the discovery of a rare spinal tumor led Lyman to examine his life. In MAD COWBOY, he tells the moving story of his own personal transformation, and how he became a crusader for organic farming and more conscious eating habits. Lyman describes the devastating effects that modern feed lot operations are having - and will continue to have - on the environment, and also outlines the profound health benefits that switching to a vegetarian diet offers, including reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. After adopting a vegetarian diet, Lyman himself lost 130 pounds and lowered his cholesterol by more than 150 points.

Howard F. Lyman is a fourth-generation family farmer from Montana. After 20 years of operating a feed lot, he sold his ranch and started working for farmers in financial trouble. He was a lobbyist in Washington, and ran for Congress in 1982.

He is the former Director of the "Beyond Beef Campaign" & the Humane Society of the United States' "Eating With Conscience" Campaign; past President of both the International Vegetarian Union, and EarthSave International; and is currently President of Voice for a Viable Future.

Howard travels over 100,000 miles every year as a speaker and lecturer. A Feature Documentary on his life is now in post-production. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife Willow Jeane, and his cat, Ceasar.
