RVML’s 3rd Idea Contest:

“Imagine A New Vision for Humanity’s Future Now”

Organized by RVML and Ashland Culture of Peace Commission

Who Organized the Contest?

RVML Resource Center’s 3rd IDEA CONTEST: WORDS & PICTURES happens Fall 2020 in collaboration with the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission. This year’s contest features $2,000 in cash prizes shared by six winners in two categories, ESSAYS and COLLAGES. The contest is open to all students aged 14-18 living in Ashland and Talent, Oregon. The prizes are made possible thanks to a grant from the Marin Community Foundation.
Entry Deadline 6pm Tuesday, September 22, 2020
Awards Ceremony 4pm Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Thalden Pavillion

Who Can Enter?

The contest is open to all students aged 14-18 living in Ashland and Talent, Oregon. There is no entry fee.

What are the Two Categories?

WORDS: 1,000-1200-Word Essay
PICTURES: 20″ x 30″ Collage, with a 150-200-Word Artist Statement

What are the Prizes?

Each Category has Three Winners:

  • 1st Place $500
  • 2nd Place $300
  • 3rd Place $200

Everyone Who Enters Will Receive:

  • 6-month RVML Library Membership
  • Certificate of Participation
  • Online and print publishing of essays (Booklet distributed at Awards Ceremony and at RVML)
  • Collages published online and displayed at a local art gallery (TBA)

How do I Enter? 

Read the guidelines and submit the entry form by 6pm Tuesday, September 22, 2020.
Write a 1000-1200-word ESSAY or create an artistic COLLAGE to communicate your response to this year’s prompt:

Frequently Asked Questions

How Will My Essay or Collage be Judged?

ESSAYS: Winning essays will be positive, sincere, and empowering; and will be evaluated on clear and correct writing, with good attention to proper grammar and spelling.

COLLAGES: Winning collages will be original, compelling and meaningful; and will be evaluated on how well the piece communicates the ideas presented in the artist’s statement.

How Will I Know if I've Won?

Three winners in each category will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 17, 2020, 4pm at SOU’s Thalden Pavillion.

Where Will the Collages be on Display?

The COLLAGES will be published on RVML’s website and displayed at a local Art Gallery for approximately 30 days beginning October 17, 2020 (Location TBA.)

Where Will the Essays be Published?

All the ESSAY submissions will be published on RVML’s website and distributed in a booklet at the Awards Ceremony (also available at RVML, 1757 Ashland Street, Ashland.)
