Collage Guidelines

Your COLLAGE must have a title and be submitted no later than 6pm Tuesday, September 22, 2020 to Rogue Valley Metaphysical Library, 1757 Ashland Street, Ashland. Hours: 10-6 Tue-Sat. 541-552-9119.

IMPORTANT: You must submit a 150-200-word ARTIST’S STATMENT and a DIGITAL IMAGE of your COLLAGE with the entry form no later than 6pm September 22, 2020.

  • Your NAME and COLLAGE TITLE must be on the BACK of your Collage. Your name MUST NOT appear anywhere on the front.
  •  Your COLLAGE must be on RIDGID FOAM-CORE BOARD measuring exactly 20” x 30” (commonly available at Dollar Tree, Wal-Mart, etc.) You may orient the width/height either way you choose, and employ one or more of the following mediums: photographs, magazine/newspaper clippings, paint, watercolors, pencil, ink, fabric, or found objects. Be sure that all materials are firmly affixed. (NOTE: RVML’s Media Exchange has many picture books that may be used to source imagery.)

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Create from your heart. Winning collages will be original, compelling, and meaningful; and will be evaluated on how well the piece communicates the ideas presented in the Artist’s Statement.

CONTEST DETAILS:

Prizes: First Place – $500. Second Place – $300. Third Place – $200.

The contest is open to students aged 14-18 living in Ashland and Talent, Oregon. There is no entry fee.

Each student may only enter once in either or both categories.

Collages will be judged by a panel selected by RVML and Ashland Culture of Peace Commission.

Entries using explicit sexuality, profanity, or excessive negativity will be disqualified.

Digital images of the collages and the Artist’s Statements become property of RVML.

Collages will be displayed at a local art gallery (TBA) after which time they will be available for pick-up.

Winners will be announced during a public Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 17, 2020, 4pm at SOU’s Thalden Pavillion.

All ENTRANTS WILL RECEIVE: 

  • Six-month RVML library membership
  • Certificate of Participation
  • Online and print publishing of essays and collages

ENTRY DEADLINE: 6pm Tuesday, September 22, 2020

Essay Guidelines

Your ESSAY must have a title and be 1000-1200 words. Your ESSAY must be submitted electronically no later than 6pm Tuesday, September 22, 2020 with the entry form as a PDF-format digital file (preferred) or as a .doc or .docx-format file (MS Word.)

IMPORTANT: For the purposes of anonymizing the entries, your name and contact info must be the only text on page one of the document and must appear nowhere else. Page two must begin with the title in 16-point Ariel font, centered and bolded, followed by your essay, using 12-point Arial font, double-spaced, with 1″ margins.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Write from your heart, responding to the prompt: “Imagine a New Vision for Humanities Future Now”. Winning essays will be positive, sincere, and empowering. The writing will be clear and correct, with good attention to proper grammar, etc.
